Food Inc!

If you haven't watched Food Inc, get off your computer and go rent it.
The premise of the movie is to make you think about the food that you eat and if you don't like where it comes from and how it is produced that you have the power to take action!
Since Chef's was diagnosis we have become more conscious about what we consume. We have cut out high fructose corn syrup and have improved how we prepare our food and what we eat. I took a raw foods course last winter that really opened my eyes to many practice in the food manufacturing industry, as well as the benefits of a healthier diet. The food industry really would like us to all be little puppets and just eat what they put on the shelves and supply to fast food joints. They don't want us to start asking questions and looking into what really happens in the raising of crops and animals destined for our tables.
Here a a couple of snippets of what the the movie taught me. I learned that ROUND-UP ready soy beans actually contain the chemicals that make up round up weed killer. The company that produces these seeds won't let farms save any seed for the next planting season for the company owns all the seed because they have a patient on it because it is a genetically modified seed. If you are caught saving seed the company will prosecute you and then blacklist the farmer making it impossible for them to grow the crop. If a farm doesn't buy the round-up seeds they are still at risk of prosecution because of cross pollination. If seeds our found in the farmers field that hasn't bought the round-up seed they will also be sued. HELLO WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE!!!! Check this out...Did you know that over 50% of the ground beef on the market is treated with ammonia! Yes the stuff you would clean your toilet with is in your beef. They wouldn't need to treat the beef if they would feed cows grass instead of grain for 120 days before taking them to market. There is so much more evilness in the beef industry but I won't go into it here you need to watch the show to find out for yourself.
After Chef and I had finished the movie we headed out to source local chicken, beef, pork, and other products. We live in a small community but were able to quickly find beef and pork that aren't treated with antibiotics and are feed proper diets. Chicken was a bit harder to find but we found tons of local places with eggs. We belonged to an organic farm co-op a couple years ago but weren't in the mindset to really appreciate what it was doing for us. We have decided to join the co-op again next summer and become active members not just paying the share price but going out and actually working the farm to gain the skills and knowledge so that we don't have to rely on others in the future.
